Qantas CEO Penalized After Major Customer Cyberbreach

Qantas CEO Vanessa Hudson is to undergo a A$250,000 pay reduction following a large cyberattack, with the airline trying to hold staff accountable and enhance corporate governance.

Qantas Airways Ltd. has fined her CEO Vanessa Hudson and her team of leaders A$800,000 after a cyberattack that breached the data of 5.7 million customers. According to the annual report of the airline, the CEO lost A$250,000 in compensation, and the five executive managers lost a total of A$550,000.

The overall remuneration of the CEO increased to A$6.31 million in the year ended June, compared with A$4.38 million last year, despite the penalty. Qantas found out about the cyberattack on June 30 and also acted promptly to ensure the breach was contained and helped the impacted customers.

According to the board, the decision shows that it is committed to accountability and enhanced corporate governance. Qantas Chairperson John Mullen stressed that the CEO and management responded quickly to help customers, but they realized that the incident was serious and deserved financial implications.

Qantas also announced that annual profit increased by 15 percent to A$2.4 billion, which also reflects the financial revival of the airline despite its reputational issues.
