Google simplifies the transition to Gemini by introducing new tools for importing chatbot memory and conversation history.
With Google Gemini’s widespread adoption and rapidly rising popularity, it is natural to expect a segment of users to continue switching to Gemini from its competitor chatbots. However, a deterrent to taking this leap of faith is the inability for users to transfer their personal information from the chatbots they use to Gemini. With using a workaround or starting fresh being the only options at present, Google is finally developing a method to simplify the process.
Furthermore, Android Authority reports that Google’s upcoming update will allow users to import data from another chatbot with two new options. Referring to version 17.11.54.sa.arm64 of the Google app, the first option is the ability to import chats from services as a .zip file. Second, users can import “memory” by copying and pasting a prompt from the Gemini app on the chatbot they are switching from. After this, all that is required is to copy the result and paste it into the dedicated field in the Gemini app. At the core of this process is an effort to make it easier for Gemini to understand users’ preferences rather than it having to be trained manually through feeding of all relevant user information.
Moreover, upon rollout the Gemini app’s account switcher menu would prominently display the new “Import memory to Gemini” option. Importantly, only zip files of up to 5GB can reportedly be processed by Gemini’s upcoming import tool. This means that user data exceeding a couple of years or more can only be transferred using the first prompt-based option. Interestingly, ChatGPT already allows users to export existing data as a .zip file in just a few steps and Claude offers a similar setup for its users. According to CIO Bulletin, this development is a welcome trend that follows Google following the lead of its competitor chatbots. It is expected that the data migration tool will be incorporated soon to the Gemini app, although an exact date remains unclear.
