In the space of growing cryptocurrency market generally, particularly for cross border payments, Ripple is launching its U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin RLUSD on Ethereum and XRP ledger.

New York State Financial Services approves Ripple introduction of its stablecoin ripple USD (RLUSD) effective Tuesday. The dollar stable cryptocurrency will subsequently offer an alternative for investors and businesses in a mixed issuing environment across the Ethereum blockchain and XRP ledger.

Indeed, Ripple is coming into a booming stablecoin market. The entire stablecoin segment has achieved a fifty percent increase in market cap this year alone based on the fact that more than ninety percent of the market is dominated by Tether (USDT) and Circle's USDC. Ripple’s solution to the problem of market concentration involves creating a different avenue to the strategies adopted by the other mainstream players.

Jack McDonald, Ripple's senior vice president for stablecoins, explained why the launch was motivated. Data justifying this is the increased demand for astute cross border payments, he said. “We’ve seen unprecedented growth in our payment flows, and as a result we’ve gone about innovating RLUSD as a much less costly alternative,” he concluded.

Ripple has opted to list the new stablecoin on select global exchanges initially even though they will not include Coinbase or Robinhood. In recent dates, Ripple has also faced regulatory pressure, including facing litigation with the SEC, charging Ripple with selling an unregistered security. However, the 2023 ruling was that XRP is not a security if sold to retail investors.

Ripple's stablecoin is really about licensing its cross border payment business which is mostly outside the U.S. for now, and allowing some mixing of XRP and stablecoin depending upon the specific payment needs of the growing crypto ecosystem.
