Flooding causes the city of Chicago to reduce water usage

Residents of the city of Chicago were requested to lower their water usage due to the extreme flooding conditions.

On Sunday evening, the city of Chicago urged residents to use less water, clarifying that doing so would help move rising waters into its public sewer in the wake of serious flooding brought on by torrential rains.

The office of Mayor Brandon Johnson pleaded with Chicago residents in a news release to refrain from using extra water for showers, laundry, or dishwashing during stormy weather. The mayor's office explained that it is frequently challenging for the sewer system to move water effectively when substantial amounts of rain fall in a short amount of time.

The intense rainstorms had a significant impact on the entire city, nearly drowning cars and forcing the NASCAR Chicago Street Race to postpone and cancel one of its events. By utilizing all available flood mitigation tools, the Department of Water Management said on Sunday Evening that it was attempting to get floodwaters to recede.

The city stated that it was taking precedence over areas where drivers were stranded in flooded viaducts.

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago announced earlier in the day that it had permitted water from the Chicago River to enter Lake Michigan in an effort to reduce flooding.

While cleanup efforts are ongoing, the city advises residents to refrain from driving through flooded areas. Residents can report water in their lofts, standing water on the streets, or viaduct flooding in the city by calling 311, visiting 311.chicago.org, or using the CHI311 app.
