Saudi Arabia Accelerates Land Restoration and Sets New Benchmark in Environmental Sustainability

From desert restoration to cleaner air, the Kingdom’s sustainability push is delivering measurable impact

In a significant step toward environmental sustainability, Saudi Arabia is steadily transforming its landscape through large-scale restoration and greening efforts. The country has successfully rehabilitated its first 1 million hectares of degraded land, an early milestone under the ambitious Saudi Green Initiative.

Led by the National Greening Program, these efforts aim to restore 40 million hectares and plant 10 billion trees. The initiative brings together government bodies, private companies, and nonprofit organizations, creating a unified approach to tackling land degradation and climate challenges.

The impact is already visible. Over 159 million trees have been planted, helping restore natural habitats and improve biodiversity. Advanced technologies such as satellite imaging and drones are being used to monitor progress and ensure long-term success.

The benefits extend beyond the environment. Cleaner air has led to nearly a 50% drop in dust storms, while over 68,000 jobs have been created in areas like agriculture and environmental services. The initiative is also boosting eco-friendly industries, including ecotourism.

As reported by CIO Bulletin, Saudi Arabia’s progress signals a growing global shift, where sustainability is no longer optional, but essential for future growth and resilience.
