Belgium Accelerates EV Adoption amid Corporate Push

The EV market is booming in Belgium with corporate incentives, more charging networks, and strategic production motivating the initiative, and still, individual-consumer adoption is the slowest.

Belgium is riding the electric vehicle (EV) transition, with corporate fleet incentives playing a strong role in moving into this sector as an actor on the continent of Europe. New EV registrations in 2024 increased by one hundred and twenty-seven thousand seven hundred and fifty (127,750, 36% points up on 2023), but machines that are battery electric vehicles (BEVs) already took a third of the market share (28.5).

This phenomenon is because Belgium has aggressive fiscal policies that have provided 100% tax deductibility to firms that buy EVs. Corporate fleets dominate the market with 86.7% of all new registrations. Consumers at their level, the private end user, are not fully convinced by expensive initial purchases and a fear of severe infrastructure limitations causes a secondary EV market bottleneck.

Nonetheless, the country of Belgium is still growing its electrified stations by 72% in 2024 and has reached 83,111 points. City transportation is also transforming, with electric cabs, ride-hailing apps and two-wheel EVs like e-bikes being more popular with individual customers.

The manufacturing industry is reacting in a strategic position with Volvo in Ghent to begin manufacturing the EX30 EV to evade tariffs and shorten delivery times. This action facilitates the presence of Belgium in the European EV chain and provides additional employment.

Although fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) are a niche, EV adoption in Belgium as a corporate initiative shows what electrification could achieve after fleets and help bridge the policy incentive/consumer acceptance gap.

The EV story of Belgium implicates the tradeoff of ambitious environmental proposals, corporate strategy and consumer readiness in determining the sustainable future of mobility on the continent.
