Amazon Working on a Smartphone Industry Re-Entry With New AI Powered Device

Amazon’s "Transformer" project aims to redefine mobile hardware through AI-first features and seamless Alexa integration.

As per a recent report, Amazon is working on developing a new smartphone codenamed “Transformer”, marking the tech giant’s foray into the smartphone industry after more than 11 years since its Fire Phone. The company’s devices and services unit is said to be developing the device with a focus on including personalized features that would make it simpler for customers to use Amazon’s suite of apps, including Amazon Shopping, Prime Video, and Prime Music. It is also expected to make using third-party applications a seamless experience. An example of this is food ordering through Grubhub to diversify use cases.

Furthermore, the smartphone would also function as a mobile hub by integrating with Alexa and connecting multiple services into a single, unified interface. It would also expand support to work with most of Amazon’s devices. The company is said to be focusing on AI as a key feature of the project to benefit on two fronts. First, this would allow users to interact with services directly and reduce their reliance on traditional app stores that require downloading and managing multiple applications. Second, the inclusion of AI features is also being envisioned as a strategy to encourage customers to use its AI products. The move towards deeper AI integration also aligns with the company’s founder, Jeff Bezos’ vision of developing a computing assistant that is accessible at all times throughout the day.

Moreover, a relatively new unit named ZeroOne within the Devices division is reportedly entrusted with the smartphone’s development. It is led by J Allard, a former Microsoft executive and the co-founder of Xbox. At the moment, it is unclear when the device will be launched and may even be discontinued depending on strategic or financial implications. According to CIO Bulletin, Amazon’s new smartphone announcement can become a success only when the company avoids making the same mistakes that plagued its earlier Fire Phone release. The company’s goal would be to ensure development focus remains on track in the face of challenges.
