Huawei files a lawsuit in Europe against Transsion because of a patent disagreement over video playback technology in the competition among smartphone manufacturers that flares anew.
Huawei has filed a new court battle in Europe against Transsion, another upstart in the gadgets market. Huawei accuses Transsion of violating a patent it owns on video playback technology, popularized by its Tecno and Infinix smartphone brands.
The bone of contention is the European patent EP2725797, which has European patent recognition on an offset decoding device aimed at reducing stuttering and distortion on display devices. Huawei has alleged that Transsion has infringed this innovation without permission and the two parties are before the Munich branch of the Unified Patent Court.
The case follows closely after the jubilation in Huawei as its Pura 80 Ultra became the first device to prevail in all the latest camera tests on DxOMark. It is especially relevant in an industry already brimming with intellectual property fights given that the firm has had a robust presence in smartphones and gadgets.
It is not the first time the two companies are facing each other. In 2019, Huawei accused Transsion of infringing on its theme wallpapers, claiming compensation of almost USD 2 million.
With the emergence of rivalry in the international gadgets market, lawsuits such as this one raise the question of the increased significance of the protection of intellectual property to the technological behemoths. The ruling in the case may affect the way that smaller brands pursue innovation when they are working among established brands, such as Huawei.
