Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda recently held crucial high-level discussions in New Delhi with an official delegation from Kerala, led by the state’s Health Minister K. Muraleedharan. He pledged strong central support for big regional healthcare projects. During the session, Nadda made it very clear that the Union Government remains fully committed to setting up a world-class AIIMS Kerala facility. To reduce regional medical seat shortages, the ministry granted in-principle clearance for admissions to begin for 100 MBBS seats at K. Karunakaran Memorial Government Medical College in Thiruvananthapuram from the next academic year.

Addressing Historical Infrastructure Delays

Addressing the state delegation directly, Nadda expressed severe dissatisfaction over the prolonged operational inertia surrounding existing public assets. Pointing to multi-crore infrastructure that sat idle for nearly a decade, the Union Minister stated, "Calling the delay criminal negligence, nearly 1,100 students could have benefited from medical education had admissions begun on time." He emphasized that delaying operational clearances on built-up campus capacity actively deprives aspiring doctors of essential training while stalling community medical access across the southern region.

Upgrading Regional Medical Infrastructure

• In-principle nod to establish fully equipped Trauma Care Centres at major district hospitals statewide.

• Direct central assistance aimed at modernizing three key mental health centers across Kerala.

• Formal invitation to state officials to submit a comprehensive proposal for establishing India's first Genetic Institute in Kerala.

Expanding Health Insurance and Public Health Support

The central ministry signaled positive consideration regarding Kerala's requests for expanded social safety nets and essential pharmaceutical supplies:

• Approval in principle for enhancing population coverage under the central health insurance framework.

• Assurances to increase funding allocations under the National Health Mission (NHM) once additional central funds become available.

• Direct assistance for administering preventive HPV vaccination drives targeting young girls and securing specialized cancer treatments.

Strengthening State Virology and Research Capabilities

Also, recognizing Kerala’s active public health surveillance work, Nadda promised more central financial backing for the State Virology Institute, so it can strengthen diagnostic readiness against newly emerging diseases. State Health Minister Muraleedharan said he welcomed the meeting’s cooperative approach, and he noted that central authorities looked ready to solve urgent medical needs.
