Electronic Arts cuts 400 positions and shuts down legendary developer BioWare, shifting corporate focus toward high-yield live-service platforms and core sports franchises
As part of a major reorganization in its gaming sector, Electronic Arts has announced its decision to eliminate about 400 jobs and is officially closing the renowned development studio BioWare. The studio, which was set up thirty years ago and is based in Edmonton, gained worldwide recognition for producing story-oriented series such as Mass Effect and Dragon Age. The company's management has stated that the cutbacks will impact the development teams at its North American sites, with the winding down of operations to take place over the coming months as the various projects are concluded.
The decision to close the studio occurs at a time when interactive entertainment publishers are reviewing their long-term allocation of capital in a market that is becoming more competitive. The company's senior management intends to redirect its engineering resources towards live-service platforms, its mobile products, and its main internal sports titles.
The active pre-production work on unannounced single-player role-playing projects will be completely stopped.
Departing studio engineers and narrative designers will receive immediate severance payments and be matched for internal transfers.
Reassignment of select core intellectual properties to centralized Electronic Arts studio groups.
Reflecting on the painful decision to sunset the historic production house, BioWare General Manager Gary McKay stated: “It is with a heavy heart that we share this news today. Creating worlds that players love has been our privilege, and our primary focus now is supporting our team through this transition.”
The decision highlights the widespread trend of budget cuts taking place in the digital media and technology fields as a result of the market adjustments that have come about since the pandemic. Because of their high development costs and the fact that productions take several years, large publishers have been forced to reduce their financial risks.
The long-term experimental narrative research and design projects are being cancelled.
Operational overhead across remaining internal development hubs is being consolidated.
The decision to close a renowned studio that focused on narrative-driven games is a response to the shift in consumer preferences towards ongoing online multiplayer experiences and recurring digital revenue streams. With publishing budgets decreasing, big studios are under increasing pressure to ensure reliable returns on their huge production investments. CIO Bulletin views this development as a stark signal of the shifting operational priorities and cost pressures governing modern triple-A game development.
