Judge rejects JetBlue’s $3.8 billion acquisition of Spirit Airlines

In support of the Biden administration, a federal judge has ruled that JetBlue Airways cannot buy Spirit Airlines because the $3.8 billion deal will reduce competition.

A federal judge is ruling with the Biden administration and preventing JetBlue Airways from purchasing Spirit Airlines because the $3.8 billion acquisition would lessen competition.

The Justice Department filed a lawsuit to halt the merger, claiming that by dismantling Spirit, the largest low-cost airline in the country, prices would increase. JetBlue declared that it disapproved of the decision and was thinking about filing an appeal.

In order to better compete with larger rivals that control the majority of the US air travel industry, the New York carrier claimed that the agreement was necessary.

The Biden administration, which has worked hard to oppose industry consolidation on the grounds that it harms consumers, celebrated the decision. The Justice Department stated in the airline case that travelers who rely on Spirit's inexpensive fares would be particularly harmed if JetBlue were permitted to purchase Spirit.

Spirit Airlines Inc.'s stock nearly instantly fell by more than half, while JetBlue's stock increased by 8%.

The decision was JetBlue's second significant legal loss in less than a year in federal court. JetBlue and American Airlines' Northeast cooperation was shattered by another judge in the same Boston courthouse.

The sixth-largest airline in the country by revenue, JetBlue, must now devise a new growth strategy. That will be Joanna Geraghty's task as the next CEO.
