The Indian Supreme Court altered the entry requirements for aspiring civil judges across the country. In a pivotal ruling reviewing previous judicial appointment guidelines, the bench modified the traditional courtroom experience threshold. To bridge the gap in practical courtroom knowledge, successful candidates must now complete intensive judicial education. The decision introduces a mandatory one-year training period at the State Judicial Academy. This specialized academy instruction is paired with six months of clerkship under a District Judge and another six months under a sitting High Court Judge.

How will these added training layers alter the career path for fresh law graduates aiming for the bench? The judicial panel noted that imposing rigid bar requirements without formal training created unnecessary hurdles for talented legal minds. Furthermore, the court announced a transition window ending March 31, 2027. Highlighting the court's stance on professional exposure, Chief Justice Surya Kant noted: "The direction is that all law graduates will be eligible to apply notwithstanding the three-year practice requirement, having regard to the fact that more than one year has elapsed since the judgment under review was pronounced".

Those chosen to serve during the transition period will act as Trainee Judicial Officers while on their clerkship training. This approach ensures that there is professionalism in place and at the same time opens up opportunities for young lawyers.
