President Biden Signs Historic Ban on Russian-Enriched Uranium, Unlocks $2.7 Billion for the U.S.

In a significant move aimed at disrupting President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine, President Joe Biden signed into law a ban on Russian-enriched uranium imports on Monday, as announced by the White House. This ban, which comes into effect in about 90 days, targets Russia, the world's leading supplier of enriched uranium, responsible for approximately 24% of the enriched uranium used by U.S. nuclear power plants. The legislation not only prohibits the import of Russian-enriched uranium but also unlocks around $2.7 billion in funding allocated in previous legislation to bolster the U.S. uranium fuel industry. Jake Sullivan, the national security adviser, hailed the move as historic, emphasizing its role in enhancing the nation's energy and economic security by reducing reliance on Russia for civilian nuclear power. Furthermore, the law aligns with multilateral goals set with key allies and partners, including Canada, France, Japan, and the United Kingdom. These countries pledged last December to collectively invest $4.2 billion to expand uranium enrichment and conversion capacity.
