Across India people demonstrate legal disagreement about the new waqf law and express concerns about minority rights while protesting their property ownership.
The Waqf Amendment Act 2025 which the Indian government enacted created nationwide discussions alongside legal filings that have spread throughout the entire country. The new law designed to adjust waqf property management prompts opposition from political leaders together with minority groups and experts in the field.
These properties belong to the Central Waqf Council but undergo constant legal conflicts because of historical disputes as well as unclear land titles which state-level waqf boards under the council handle. The new law appears to promise resolution because it tackles the 13,000 pending cases and the 59,000 properties that are allegedly besieged. The critics believe this legislation takes rights from minority communities through the deletion of the “waqf by user” provision.
Categories of property disputes may worsen because of unclear wording in the new law according to legal experts. Multiple petitions questioning the amendment currently proceed through the Supreme Court. The Indian government supports this law because it aims to stop misuse while critics argue authorities gain too much power from its provisions.
The Waqf Amendment Act serves as a major point of conflict in India while protests break out alongside continuous court reviews.
