1,200+ miles of new bike lanes worldwide in every corner those improve urban mobility, safety, and sustainability as part of the global campaign on smart infrastructure.
Over 1,200 bike lanes have been established in 34 cities around the world since 2021, which is a significant plunge into smart infrastructure. Led by the Institute of Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) the Cycling Cities campaign set out to make cycling a regular and permanent transport system in cities.
The campaign was founded at COP26 in Glasgow and was a response to COVID-19 and its disruption of travel behavior. The cities that participated in the process, including Addis Ababa, Los Angeles, and Mexico City, funded the building of smart infrastructure favorable to bikes, which contributed to the minimization of reliance on personal transportation.
New York City had an 8 percent increase in cycling trips after 17 miles of Greenways program expansion, and Los Angeles implemented safety issues such as protected parking lanes and bus-boarding islands. By redesigning the largest street, Mexico City was able to improve cyclist connectivity.
The program highlighted that smart infrastructure should be inclusive, long, and effectively incorporated with the public transit. ITDP currently intends to collaborate with the World Bank and others to finance the future plans and evaluate the influence of cycling on clean air.
The campaign will come to an official end, but ITDP will remain committed to helping cities to scale smart infrastructure that would enhance mobility, health, and access for everyone.
