Industry Leader Backs Call for Formalized Payment Pathways and Data Access Mechanisms for AI Technologies

AdvaMed, the Medtech Association, has expressed strong support for the House of Representatives’ bipartisan Task Force on Artificial Intelligence, which has recommended that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) develop a formalized payment pathway for AI-enabled medical devices. These devices, which are FDA-cleared and help in diagnosing and treating patients, have become increasingly important in modern healthcare.

The Task Force’s report highlighted the need for appropriate reimbursement policies for AI tools, which can streamline practices and reduce service times. Acknowledging that one-size-fits-all solutions are impractical, the Task Force urged Congress to evaluate emerging AI technologies to ensure Medicare benefits adequately recognize these innovations. It also emphasized the importance of expanding access to high-quality data while ensuring patient privacy.

AdvaMed is committed to supporting this initiative, particularly in developing industry standards for medical device innovation, having recently been accredited by the American National Standards Institute. The organization looks forward to collaborating with policymakers, the FDA, and the Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) to create improved post-market guidance for AI-enabled devices.
