The latest Copilot AI update by Microsoft incorporates a more user-friendly voice as well as web page scrutiny, all to promote better interaction and engagement, particularly in the consumer market.

Microsoft is updating its consumer version of a smart assistant, Copilot, with a friendlier sounding voice, and an enhanced ability to check out web pages. The rollout, which began Tuesday, is a major step in the company's push to get a stronger foothold in the consumer technology world.

“But to shape Copilot's voice, the company has drawn up a roster of creative directors”, said Mustafa Suleyman, chief executive of Microsoft AI. One time a user wanted housewarming gift ideas, so Copilot said, 'Italian (olive) oils are the hot stuff right now. Tuscan's my go-to. Super-peppery.”

Suleyman expressed hope for Copilot’s success in a crowded market of AI chatbots, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. The updated voice capabilities aim to create a more engaging user experience, with Copilot now providing verbal cues such as "cool" and "huh."

In addition, Copilot Pro subscribers, which cost $20 per month, can sign up for a “Think Deeper” feature which helps explain their decisions, such as relocating in a new city. Another test feature, Copilot Vision, works with AI that users can use in the Microsoft Edge browser to speak about the content that they see, ensuring privacy as the viewed content isn't saved.

For Suleyman, Copilot is something of an ever-present 'confidant' that will learn context about users' documents and devices. Co-founder Bill Gates is excited about these advancements, and particularly by the prospect of Copilot running emails, he said.
