Justin Trudeau criticizes Meta

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau slammed Meta’s Facebook for blocking news on the Canadian wildfire emergency.

On Monday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused Facebook with prioritizing business interests over the safety of its users during the emergency situations brought on by Canada's record wildfire season.

Because of a new law requiring digital corporations to compensate publishers for linking to or otherwise using their work online, Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, declared earlier this summer that it will keep its vow to restrict news content from Canada on its services.

Tens of thousands of people have been forced from their homes by roaring fires in Canada, and places like Yellowknife, the capital of the Northwest Territories, are in danger. In British Columbia, 30,000 people needed to evacuate.

On Friday, government ministers urged Meta to reverse its embargo on Canadian news, which affects both regional and mainstream media like the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

In a statement regarding the wildfires, the company, which has its headquarters in Northern California, stood by its choice and said that people in Canada can still use Instagram and Facebook to interact with their communities and access reliable information, such as material from reputable government agencies, emergency services, and non-governmental organizations.

Visitors and citizens of the nation are unable to access or share news on the Meta-owned social networks, including articles, videos, and audio provided by Canadian or foreign news sources.

David Eby, the premier of British Columbia, said it is unacceptable that Meta hasn't changed its mind about forbidding the sharing of Canadian news online.

He continued by saying that a lot of individuals in British Columbia obtain information about the wildfires through Facebook-shared media.
