Campbell Brown who was hired by Facebook to lead it news sector, mending its connections with the media, has officially decide to leave the company after six years.
Facebook enlisted veteran journalist Campbell Brown to mend its connections with the media as the social network came under fire in 2017 for disseminating fake and misleading news.
Six years later, Ms. Brown is leaving the business, which is now called Meta, because top executives are no longer as concerned with what the press has to say about it.
Ms. Brown, 54, a former TV anchor and supporter of education who for several years served as Meta's most visible spokesperson to the media, announced on Tuesday that she would leave this year to seek other opportunities. Her team will be included into other teams working on developing media and sports collaborations, and she will continue to serve as a company adviser.
She is exiting Meta, leaving the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, without one of its most prominent spokespersons in the news, sports, and entertainment industry at a crucial time. The preliminary rounds of the 2024 U.S. presidential election are currently taking place, and Meta's function as a provider of voter data will undoubtedly come under investigation.
Facebook hired Ms. Brown and urged her to develop partnerships with platform-using news companies. Ms. Brown, a former CNN prime-time anchor, developed a relationship with news executives who viewed Facebook as a competitor for digital advertising dollars as well as a significant, albeit unstable, source of traffic for their websites and applications.
