Solar Power in Iraq brings TotalEnergies and QatarEnergy Together

QatarEnergy partners with TotalEnergies in a solar 1.25 GWp project in Iraq to continue traditional oil and gas resources but also ramp up renewable energy efforts.

QatarEnergy and TotalEnergies SE strike historic partnership for a 1.25 gigawatt peak (GWp) solar power plant in Iraq, a first boost for renewable energy in country. Part of a TotalEnergies program aimed at increasing sustainable oil and gas production in Iraq where there are enormous oil and gas reservoirs, the project is complement to the TotalEnergies Integrated Project on Gas Growth (GGIP).

QatarEnergy will own about 50 of Iraq’s solar plant, with TotalEnergies retaining a 50% stake. Approximately 350,000 homes will receive electricity through 2 million bifacial tracking solar panels on a single axis tracking system. The development will take place from the time of 2025 – 2027.

QatarEnergy’s chief executive officer and the country’s minister of energy, Saad Sherida al-Kaabi, termed the initiative as significant and pointed out that, ‘We eagerly anticipate working alongside our strategic partner, TotalEnergies, to help take this project forward in Iraq’s energy sector’. While balancing the ambitions of solar energy with those of oil and gas, he praised the support of the Iraqi government in that endeavor.

In Iraq's GGIP consortium, QatarEnergy is set to work with TotalEnergies and Basra Oil Company, which will boost gas recovery and leverage natural resource potential. This is an important step in Iraq's energy evolution bringing together traditional oil and gas companies with new energy projects.  

The solar project is also a commitment by QatarEnergy, the country’s state owned energy giant, to reduce the nation’s petroleum dependence, and it has a 25 per cent interest in the consortium.
