A powerful earthquake in Venezuela has caused widespread destruction, leaving dozens dead, hundreds injured, and communities struggling with the aftermath of back-to-back tremors.
According to reports, the interim president of Venezuela stated that the twin earthquakes caused at least 32 fatalities and 700 injuries. Delcy Rodriguez added that during the next few hours, rescuers from different nations would be arriving in Venezuela. She expressed gratitude to Donald Trump for offering to support the nation following the earthquake in Venezuela.
Following two consecutive earthquakes that caused buildings in the city to crumble and Venezuela's main airport to close, Venezuela previously proclaimed a state of emergency.
In Venezuela, powerful earthquakes are uncommon. Despite being close to several fault lines, earthquakes are far less frequent there than in other Back-to-BackCaribbean plates.
Earthquakes are common along the Pacific coast, such as in Mexico and Chile, which are located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a seismically active tectonic region that accounts for 90% all earthquakes.

In the capital, Caracas, buildings also collapsed in the quake, which sent people running into the streets. As reported by CIO Bulletin, Ms. Rodriguez declared a state of emergency to tend to the injured and called on medical professionals to come to work. Two buildings fell in a municipality in Caracas and three people died, the mayor said. The first quake hit just after 6 p.m. 7.2 in magnitudes, Eastern Time. A second quake, this one measuring 7.5, struck less than a minute later, U.S. monitoring agencies said. It was the biggest quake to hit the country since 1900. San Felipe, a city of about 220,000 people in Yaracuy, west of Caracas, was near the epicenter. The reported magnitudes of the earthquakes may change as seismologists review the data.
Paul Earle, a seismologist at the U.S. Geological Survey, described the earthquakes as devastating.
