Macy’s plans to close 150 “underproductive” locations over the next three years, or more than a fifth of its department store chain, have come to light.
Over the following three years, Macy’s intentions to eliminate 150 “underproductive” stores — more than a fifth of its department store empire — have been revealed.
The company released a cautious trading prognosis for the upcoming year and said that it would close roughly fifty locations by the end of 2024. The store, which revealed intentions to shed 2,350 positions, or 3.5% of its workforce, in January, said it will focus more on luxury shopping as part of what it called a “bold new chapter.”
Macy’s intends to open 30 Blue Mercury cosmetics boutiques and 15 of its upscale Bloomingdale stores as part of this focus. In addition to the closures, Macy’s promised to expand smaller stores and give priority to investing in around 350 sites.
The company’s new CEO, Tony Spring, claims that workers at Macy’s are motivated by the work that lies ahead as they quicken their route to increased market share, profitable, sustainable growth, and value creation for their investors.
During Wall Street’s pre-market trade, Macy’s shares fell 1.4%. The retailer turned down a $5.8 billion buyout bid from investment management Brigade Capital Management and hedge fund Arkhouse Management last month. Department shops faced intense competition from internet competitors even prior to the pandemic.
