Zelenskyy indicates that the country is willing to compromise on a wider peace agreement through the available NATO-like security assurances.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that Ukraine is ready to accept security guarantees based on NATO Article 5 in a compromise to condition peace. He explained that even though the objective of Ukraine was always uniting with NATO, other security options provided by the United States, Europe, Canada, and Japan could serve to curtail future Russian aggression.
Zelenskyy stated that we will disclose the specific conditions of these security guarantees in the near future. He also condemned a U.S.-proposed free economic zone in some regions of Donbas, saying that it is not just but ambiguous in relation to governance. With the ongoing discussions, Zelensky focused on the importance of Ukraine trying other options in case the ongoing peace talks fail, stating that the state must do everything it can to stop this war with Russia.
In recent history, the United States has proposed a middle ground that includes the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from some portions of the eastern part of Ukraine in favor of a Russian non-entry pledge. However, Zelenskyy emphasized a more practical security system.
To evaluate the progress of diplomacy, Zelenskyy visited Berlin to hold a conversation with the German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, the leaders of other countries in Europe, and the representatives of NATO. German officials established that there would be several heads of state that will attend, whereas local media spoke of a potential meeting of U.S. representatives.
