Leaseweb Accelerates Development of European Sovereign Cloud Architecture

Leaseweb advances Europe’s digital sovereignty by expanding its cloud campus project with open APIs, programmable networking, and scalable sovereign infrastructure.

Leaseweb, a leading cloud services and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) provider, was recently apprised of the growing momentum of its European Cloud Campus project as part of the Important Projects of Common European Interest on Cloud Infrastructure and Services (IPCEI-CIS) program to advance the European sovereign cloud. Over the past year, the company has actively engaged the developer and partner ecosystem and expanded its cloud infrastructure platform. This indicates European industry shifting from policy discussions towards building practical, sovereign cloud infrastructure.

Furthermore, Leaseweb has made significant strides in creating flexible and scalable sovereign cloud architecture in Europe, with auto scaling and load balancing now supported by the public cloud compute layer in addition to enhancing security and efficiency of storage over a private network. To increase network flexibility, architectural improvements such as programmable virtual overway networking have been initiated to increase network flexibility. Additionally, the company also released its initial compute API with open definitions along with a Terraform provider to facilitate automation and developer integration. This complements the already rolled out and continuously expanding components, such as platform monitoring, management tools, and an internal management interface.

Moreover, Leaseweb’s strong performance in its European Cloud Campus project is the result of active investment in technology development and engagement with the broader cloud and infrastructure community throughout 2025. According to Robert van der Meulen, Director Product Strategy at Leaseweb, “From expanding our compute and container platforms to releasing open APIs and developer tools, these efforts demonstrate how industry and technology are coming together to build flexible, secure, and scalable cloud infrastructure for Europe.” CIO Bulletin views this development as providing significant impetus to advancing automation, network flexibility, and ecosystem integration for supporting Europe’s digital sovereignty with world-class infrastructure.
