India and the U.S. successfully launch the NISAR space satellite that aims to monitor the changes in the lands, ice and climate of the earth using even more advanced radar systems.
NASA and ISRO space missions were successful because the satellite, NISAR, was launched on July 30 and is expected to circle the earth within three years of successful launching. With its dual-radar technology NISAR is destined to revolutionize the way the earth is observed by operating two channels of the radar that take scans of the land and ice surfaces twice every 12 days.
Being the initial joint NASA-ISRO space project, NISAR will have L-band and S-band radar systems that inspect earth hazards such as earthquakes, landslides, and volcanoes. It will also aid in infrastructure monitoring and assisting the emergency response team in the case of disasters such as hurricanes and floods.
This groundbreaking space project will help investigators monitor the evolution of glaciers, ice caps, and forest clearance and will also provide groundbreaking knowledge about the level of soil irrigation, plant development, and the deformation of the land. The satellite's coverage will be essential for tracking climate-driven ice melts in Antarctica.
NISAR introduces the concept of international partnership in the next generation of space-based science in which the teams will operate across 13 time zones.
