The BGT is looming and KL Rahul's injury has triggered fear in India's opening order on the eve of the BGT tournament against Australia.
As Indian Team gear up for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, yet another storm has erupted over KL Rahul's injury. Meanwhile, 32 years old Rahul suffered a hit to his right elbow while one of the intra-squad matches held at WACA, Perth was in session and so it may be a difficult option for the first Test match subsequently.
Rahul, who had been slated to open the batting with Yashasvi Jaiswal because Rohit Sharma would be out of the game, began the innings but had to retire hurt and sought medical assistance. He tried to bat on, but looked in pain and left the ground with the assistance of medical staff which drew concerns from the fans as well as team management.
At this time, Rahul finds himself in a tough spot as he seeks a return to form. After a poor Test series in New Zealand, averaging only 33.87, he was put in the India A side to get him ready for the Australia series. However, this too did not work out well for him in Melbourne, as he scored only 4 runs in the practice match against Australia A.
Rohit Sharma's absence from the Perth Test has been confirmed owing to personal engagements, placing a huge threat on India’s opening combination. In case there is an injury to Rahul, selectors may have to look elsewhere, with the likes of Abhimanyu Easwaran being considered for Jaiswal at the top order.
As the team has to produce impressive results against Australia for the sake of their World Test Championship Final aspirations, this injury only serves as a further hindrance in the scrappy preparations for the series.
