Veteran Prep Sports Reporter Dave Goricki Passes Away at 64

Condolences are flowing following the death of Detroit News reporter Dave Goricki, who had a long history in the prep sports community

The Michigan sports community is lamenting over the death of veteran journalist Dave Goricki, who succumbed to death at the age of 64 following a year-long fight with cancer. Goricki worked over 30 years as a prep sports reporter and was a respected individual because of his work ethic that was tireless and his extreme devotion to the high school sporting activities.

Goricki started his career at the Coldwater Daily Reporter and then joined the Detroit News, where he served a total of 31 years. He consistently put in 18-hour workdays, covering games, championships, and the journeys of athletes with fidelity and diligence.

Goricki was a colleague who was described as a consummate professional who never complained, not even when his health was failing. According to the editors, he usually balanced high school sports, college athletics, women's sports, and motorsports coverage and retained good relationships with coaches and players.

Other than reporting, Goricki was regarded as a proponent of athletics in education and tended to make student-athletes visible to the world. Michigan High School Athletic Association leaders and local coaches gave him credit for enhancing the values and influence of school sports in the entire state.

Goricki leaves behind him his aged wife, Becky, three sons, and three grandsons. The family will conduct the funeral in Michigan this week.
