Sony Brings Real Video Verification to Newsrooms

Sony’s new update lets newsrooms verify videos with the same precision as images, raising trust in visual journalism.

Sony has taken a major step in fighting misinformation by expanding its Camera Authenticity Solution to support video, alongside still images. The move aims to help news organizations and visual journalists verify that the content they receive is genuine and camera-captured.

With the latest update, the Camera Verify (beta) platform now allows users to validate both photos and videos through a secure verification URL. The system uses C2PA-compliant digital signatures; ensuring content was captured by a real camera rather than generated by AI. Similarly, the Image Verification Pre-check SDK lets organizations integrate this verification directly into their own workflows.

Currently, the solution works with select Sony cameras, including the Alpha 1 II, Alpha 7S III, FX3, and PXW-Z300. Videos must be in MP4 format at 222 Mbps or lower; 8K footage and slow/quick motion recordings are not yet supported. Sony has promised wider camera compatibility in future updates.

The technology embeds a secure digital signature in-camera at the moment of capture. Along with 3D depth and metadata, it ensures the footage’s authenticity, including date and time, cannot be tampered with. When paired with C2PA-compatible apps, the editing history is fully transparent, giving newsrooms high confidence in what they publish.

Sony’s expanded video verification underscores the growing need for trust in an era of AI-generated content, making it easier for professionals to separate fact from fiction.
