As a Megadiverse Nation, India Embraces Sustainable Farming Practices to Safeguard its Rich Biodiversity and Agricultural Future
India, one of the top 17 megadiverse countries globally, boasts an extraordinary range of biodiversity with varied ecosystems such as deserts, forests, and grasslands. Ranking eighth on the global biodiversity index, India's myriad ecosystems, species, and genetic resources highlight the critical importance of sustainable agricultural practices. With approximately 3.287 million square kilometers of land, nearly 60 percent of which is arable, India's agricultural sector is pivotal to its economy and the sustenance of its population.
The extensive agricultural landscape, coupled with urgent challenges like soil degradation, water scarcity, and climate change, has propelled India to the forefront of a global movement advocating for regenerative agriculture. Biodiversity is crucial for agriculture and food security, providing genetic resources for crops and livestock. As the seventh-largest country by land mass, India plays a significant role in global food production, thanks to its diverse climate and rich agrarian culture. In Q4 2022, India's agricultural GDP reached a record high of Rs 7,086.18 billion, accounting for 14 percent of the economy and 42 percent of total employment.
India can champion sustainable practices by prioritizing targets like Nitrogen Use Efficiency (NUE) and sustainable crop nutrition management. Empowering farmers with these practices can lead to a resilient food future, ensuring environmental conservation and agricultural productivity. By embracing regenerative agriculture, India stands to safeguard its rich biodiversity while securing its agrarian heritage and economic stability.
