Singapore’s animated film The Violinist earns global recognition after winning the highest honor at the prestigious Annecy Film Festival.
As the first animated film produced in Singapore to win the Cristal for a Feature Film, the top prize at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, The Violinist has made history. The Violinist was the first animated film made in Singapore to be chosen for Annecy Film Festival main competition. The movie's original score was honored with the SACEM Award for Best Original Soundtrack in a Feature Film.
The film is co-directed by Spanish animator Raul Garcia, a former Walt Disney Animation Studios animator whose work includes Aladdin and The Lion King, and Singaporean director and animator Ervin Han, examines themes of friendship, grief, and the power of music.
"A film that reveals the devastating impact of war, creating a profoundly moving experience that combines the emotional power of music, deeply felt performances and the sweeping historic scale of its story". – Annecy Jury.
The film centers on Fei, a musically talented Peranakan girl who grows up to become a concert violinist while looking for her childhood companion Kai, who vanished during the war. It is set in colonial Singapore and other parts of Malaya and spans the Japanese Occupation to the post-war years.
Iron Boy, the debut film by French animator Louis Clichy, who previously worked on Pixar's Wall-E and Up, won both the Annecy Jury Award and the Audience prize.
The French directors Dimitri Planchon and Jean-Paul Guigue's unconventional dramedy Blaise, a feature-length continuation of their Arte TV series, won the top prize, the Grande Prix, for outstanding film in Annecy's Contrechamp sidebar section.
Yoshitoshi Shinomiya's visually arresting anime A New Dawn, which debuted in Berlin earlier this year, won the Contrechamp Jury Award.
More than just winning an award, The Violinist’s triumph at the Annecy Film Festival shows how Singapore's animation sector is becoming more well-known throughout the world. CIO Bulletin observes that this accomplishment demonstrates how innovative technology, artistic storytelling, and cultural expression may enable smaller markets to compete globally.
