Bundesbank says Germany in recession

As a result of low external demand, cautious consumers, and high borrowing costs impeding domestic investment, Germany is most likely currently experiencing a recession, the Bundesbank stated on Monday in its customary monthly assessment of Europe's largest economy.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022 drove up energy prices, which caused Germany to struggle. The euro zone as a whole is currently suffering as the country's massive, industrialized economy is currently experiencing its fourth consecutive quarter of zero or negative growth.

The German economy has not yet recovered, according to the Bundesbank. The bank also mentioned the possibility of a modest drop in output in the first quarter of 2024. The German economy would be in a technical recession following the second consecutive fall in economic output.

The German economic model has come under scrutiny due to its poor performance, and some argue that an economic transformation is necessary because a significant portion of the country's energy-intensive heavy industry is currently being priced out of global markets.

The government has refuted the dire predictions, claiming that the situation is simply a result of high energy costs, sluggish Chinese demand, and fast inflation, which is a temporary restraint on growth rather than a fundamental examination of economic policy.

The Bundesbank claims that, for the time being, the weakness will continue.

The order backlog is decreasing, and foreign industrial demand is trending downward.

Additionally, businesses are delaying investment, in part due to the sharp increase in financing costs following the European Central Bank's decision to raise interest rates to an all-time high in order to fight inflation, according to the central bank.

Strikes in important industries like transportation could potentially hinder growth in the quarter, as high nominal wage growth is also having an effect on businesses.
