CIO Bulletin - Bio Usawa Expands BioTech Reach across West Africa

With the help of DEK, Bio Usawa works to spread the availability of BioTech in Ghana and West Africa.

The Bio Usawa, located in Nairobi, has also collaborated with vaccine producer DEK in supplying its BioTech products to the markets in Ghana and West Africa. The working relationship is expected to increase access to essential biopharmaceutical therapy including BioUcenta, the diabetic macular edema treatment by Bio Usawa.

DEK will act as a local dealer for Bio Usawa in Ghana with capabilities in cold chain warehousing, pharmacovigilance service, and a well-established distribution channel in the region. BioTech-fueled growth aims to tackle the growing twin health burden affecting Africa: the growing epidemic of non-communicable diseases and still-prevailing infectious hazards.

Patrick Lukulay, the COO of Bio Usawa stressed that it was necessary to provide life-saving treatment that was invented, which is the standard all over the world.

Regional pharmaceutical logistics expertise gained by DEK in partnership with its parent company, Kina Pharma should be able to speed up time to market and efficiency of distribution.

Bio Usawa has also collaborated with Sartorius Stedim Biotech to develop and manufacture monoclonal antibodies in Sub-Saharan Africa. The collaboration will also venture into the area of workforce training, innovation of processes and technology transfer.

Its collaboration with Sartorius Stedim Biotech is a game changer according to CEO Menghis Bairu owing to its role in enhancing the BioTech manufacturing in Africa.
