The UN is alarmed by the collapsing healthcare in North and South Kivu due to lack of medicine and increased cases of epidemics.
The United Nations is giving a serious warning on the dynamics of the healthcare condition in the North and South Kivu provinces in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) also reports that 85 percent of the health facilities are running out of medicine, and close to 40 percent have lost their personnel as a result of the ongoing conflict.
Spokesperson of the UN Stephane Dujarric reported that the ongoing hostilities have destroyed vital infrastructure that has exposed millions of people to minimal access to healthcare. Approximately one-third of the health facilities in the conflict areas in the Republic of North Kivu have been destroyed, looted, or deserted. The rest are extremely deficient in the vaccines, cholera medication, and kits to respond to sexual violence.
The number of cholera cases, 8,600, 8,000 mpox, and 10,500 measles cases has been reported since the beginning of 2025. According to the estimates of UN officials, without immediate assistance, more than 6000 death instances can take place this year, and maternal death might increase by 40 points.
Dujarric indicated that the Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan in the DRC costs 2.5 billion dollars and complained that donors have only contributed 16 percent so far and that at least $6 million worth of funding is needed to continue with life-saving healthcare services. He said that urgent actions were required to avoid a complete meltdown of the healthcare system.
