Lagos Powers a Greener Future with Landmark Tyre Recycling Initiative

A partnership between the Lagos State Government and Haggai Logistics Limited marks a new era in sustainable waste management, turning discarded tyres into valuable resources.

In a major step toward environmental sustainability, the Lagos State Government has joined forces with Haggai Logistics Limited to launch its first world-class facility dedicated to collecting and recycling end-of-life tyres. The initiative aims to transform waste into wealth while building a cleaner, more resilient Lagos.

The announcement followed the signing of three landmark Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) during the 11th Lagos International Climate Change Summit, an event that brought together experts and innovators to explore solutions for a warming planet.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, emphasized that Lagos is shifting from the traditional “pick-and-dump” waste model to a circular economy, one that recycles, reuses, and reinvests in the environment. Through this collaboration, Haggai Logistics will establish a fully automated recycling plant using advanced green technologies to convert old tyres into reusable materials.

Wahab also highlighted two other key partnerships: HAK Waste Limited, which will implement a beverage container recovery system, and Mondo 4 Africa, which will turn non-recyclable plastics into sustainable fuel.

Echoing this vision, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, Managing Director of LAWMA, noted that the government cannot tackle waste alone. “Partnerships like these are essential for turning waste into opportunity and creating a sustainable Lagos,” he said.

Together, these efforts reflect a shared belief and give a strong message to the world that waste is not just rubbish, but unexploited potential for a country’s progress.
