A leading urban platform reaches half a million managed points across Italy while cutting energy bills and carbon emissions.
CiviSmart smart lighting has hit a landmark milestone by managing half a million street fixtures across Italian municipalities. Managed by global real asset manager PATRIZIA, the platform has scaled rapidly through strategic acquisitions and organic growth to become a major force in public infrastructure modernization.
What makes smart street fixtures so vital for modern urban centers? Indeed, lighting streets takes up a huge part of a municipality's electricity bill; therefore, the need for digitalization is inevitable. In the last 18 months, CiviSmart has expanded their managed portfolio of lighting by 32 percent to include 500,000 light points from 380,000. These lighting services operate in municipalities in Southern, Central, and Northern Italy.
Over fifty percent of the portfolio is using remote monitoring and dimming options, while twenty percent is employing sophisticated point-to-point intelligent controls. These smart technologies enable the cities to manage the lighting levels, reduce operational costs, and cut down carbon emissions within the urban areas. The cities get the advantage of digitization without having to incur hefty capital expenditures.
Emphasizing the strategic importance of this milestone, Riccardo Amoroso, Chief Executive Officer of CiviSmart, stated, "Reaching 500,000 managed light points is an important milestone in CiviSmart's development and reflects the strength of our operating model and the dedication of our team."
Can smart street lighting systems be the first step towards developing a completely interconnected smart city? According to industry analysts, smart public lighting is the key to future IoT applications such as monitoring and optimizing air quality and traffic flow. CIO Bulletin says that in Europe, where nations are striving to achieve ambitious decarbonization goals, cooperation between cities and private asset managers will grow.
