Elon Musk’s Chatbot Grok Criticized for Misinformation

The chatbot created by Elon Musk, Grok, is branded as misinformed, as it failed in the Israel-Iran clash, which poses a problem to the trustworthiness of AI.

The recent study by the Atlantic Council Digital Forensic Research Lab (DFR Lab) made it concerning with the use of Elon Musk's AI chatbot, Grok, since it failed to deliver reliable data in the Israel-Iran conflict. The analysis of 130,000 posts on X done in the report indicated that the chatbot was providing somewhat false and contradictory answers.

The researchers also observed that Grok could not confirm facts and identify AI-generated visuals, as the subject was inaccurate and provided opposing decisions in a few seconds. This earned criticism of misinformation watchdog NewsGuard, which cautioned that chatbots such as Grok and its fellow Perplexity are becoming a source of fake news.

A notable one was the false verification of the allegations by Grok that China had deployed its cargo jets as military vehicles to Iran. The case has sparked increased concerns regarding the credibility of the AI-driven chatbots in times of crises.

Musk himself has been unhappy with Grok, especially its resort to such sources as Media Matters for America, which he termed as terrible. This controversy appears when there already is a legal battle, as the FTC is investigating the allegations related to Musk that have been brought against Media Matters.

The accuracy of the outputs of the AI chatbots is an urgent issue as they increase their influence.
