A modern climate science pioneer has issued a warning, claiming that an overheated study by some other scientists suggests that the planet is speeding up dangerously.
One of the pioneers of modern climate science has warned that a study that some other scientists consider a little overheated indicates that the planet is not just warming steadily but is dangerously accelerating.
The work of former NASA chief scientist James Hansen, who has since left the space agency and turned into a well-known opponent of fossil fuel use, which causes climate change, highlights a recent disagreement among scientists regarding whether or not global warming has accelerated to an even more dangerous level.
In dramatic congressional testimony in 1988, Hansen warned much of the United States about the dangers of climate change. On Thursday, he reported that since 2010, the rate of warming has increased by 50%. According to Hansen, since 2010, attempts to reduce pollution have resulted in an increase in solar energy in the atmosphere and a decrease in particles that can reflect it back into space. There will be less of the potential cooling impact due to the loss of those particles.
According to Hansen, a crucial calculation that is used to determine how much global warming will occur as a result of carbon pollution indicates warming that will occur far more quickly than predicted by the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. A less strict target of 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit is nearing its demise, he added, calling the global objective of keeping warming to 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit since pre-industrial times "deader than a doornail."
