Mercedes Benz Reimagines the Legendary Red Pig for the Electric Era

Gorden Wagener unveils bold concept that blends racing history with futuristic EV design

A striking new concept car from Mercedes-Benz is turning heads online, as the brand revisits one of its most unexpected racing legends. Gorden Wagener, the company’s former Chief Design Officer, recently revealed a modern tribute to the iconic “Red Pig” on Instagram and it is a dramatic blend of heritage and future thinking.

The original “Red Pig,” officially known as the Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3 AMG, shocked the motorsport world in 1971. Built by AMG, it was a large luxury sedan transformed into a race car that finished second at the 24 Hours of Spa. Its size, power and bright red paint earned it the nickname “Rote Sau,” meaning Red Pig. That bold machine helped put AMG on the global performance map.

Now, Wagener’s modern interpretation carries that same fearless attitude. The concept features a large chrome grille, circular LED headlights and muscular, wide shouldered bodywork. While details about the powertrain have not been officially confirmed, the futuristic styling suggests it could align with Mercedes Benz’s growing electric vehicle vision.

The simplified racing livery and aggressive stance give the concept a strong presence, showing how classic performance DNA can be translated into the  age. With this design, Mercedes Benz signals that even in a world moving toward electric mobility, its racing spirit and iconic storytelling remain very much alive.
