Preparing Future Lawyers for a Tech-Driven Legal Landscape
As the artificial intelligence industry continues to flourish, law schools across the nation are ramping up their AI course offerings and degree programs to meet growing employer demand and leverage the booming market. Over half of law schools now provide classes on AI, according to a recent American Bar Association survey. This trend has accelerated since the debut of ChatGPT in November 2022.
In response to this demand, Arizona State University’s Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law will introduce an AI specialization within its existing law, science, and technology certificate program. This addition will be available at no extra cost to students. Concurrently, the University of California, Berkeley School of Law will begin accepting applications on August 1 for a yearlong, part-time advanced law degree program aimed at equipping lawyers to counsel clients on AI. This program will cost approximately $73,000.
AI's rapid evolution, valued at $5 billion, suggests that the lifespan of these focused programs may be brief as law schools integrate AI more thoroughly into their standard curricula. Law firm recruiters highlight that many current AI courses teach the practical use of AI in legal practice, with some focusing on AI in litigation and the ethical implications of the technology.
Beyond individual courses, several law schools are establishing dedicated centers or research initiatives to explore AI's impact on the legal system. Vanderbilt Law School, for instance, launched its Vanderbilt AI Law Lab in November, aiming to find ways for AI to enhance and democratize the legal system.
