Rio Tinto operates battery-swapping haul trucks to mitigate the effects of emissions and develop sustainable mining and metals activities.
Rio Tinto and the State Power Investment Corporation of China have formed an alliance in an attempt to test battery swap technology of electric haul trucks in the Oyu Tolgoi copper mine in Mongolia. The initiative is an important move towards ensuring sustainability at the company in the metals and mining industry.
Rio Tinto, being one of the largest companies in the world in the metals and mining industry, wishes to minimize its carbon emissions caused by haulage fleets, one of the major sources of Scope 1 and Scope 2. The pilot will consider the effectiveness of the operation and the cost-effectiveness of the operation and promote the long-term implementation of cleaner technology in surface mining.
Rio Tinto is one of the giants in the world of metals and mining that operates extensively in the field of iron ore, aluminum, and copper. Though there have been recent financial setbacks, the company has high balance sheet underpinnings, and it has been engaged in sustainable innovation.
The new battery swap trial is another indication of Rio Tinto's desire to be even greener in terms of mining as the world demands decarbonization in heavy industries.
