With a diversified energy strategy, Argentina is positioned to become a global energy leader while supporting the green transition.
Argentina is rapidly evolving into a key player in the global energy market, balancing its rich fossil fuel resources with expanding renewable energy capabilities and critical mineral production. Historically known for its oil and gas production, the country is now making strides in solar and wind energy, while also capitalizing on its position within the lithium triangle, alongside Chile and Bolivia, to supply vital minerals for the green transition.
In 2024, Argentina’s oil and gas production reached near-record levels, largely driven by the vast Vaca Muerta shale formation. The country’s crude oil output surged by 50% from January 2021 to September 2024, with natural gas production growing by 27%. Vaca Muerta alone is estimated to hold over 308 trillion cubic feet of shale gas and 16 billion barrels of recoverable oil, positioning Argentina among the top global producers of shale resources.
Simultaneously, Argentina is investing in its renewable energy sector. The government has set an ambitious target of 20% of its electricity coming from renewable sources by 2025, with a focus on solar power in the north and wind energy in Patagonia. In December, a $600 million project was announced to improve energy infrastructure in the country’s northwest, aimed at powering mining operations with renewable energy.
With its strategic resources and increasing focus on sustainability, Argentina is not only enhancing its energy security but also playing a crucial role in the global shift towards greener energy solutions.
