ciobulletin - Banpu, EnergyAustralia Expand Renewable Energy Storage in Victoria

In Victoria, Banpu and EnergyAustralia collaborate on a renewable energy storage project at scale to stabilize the grid and make it sustainable.

Banpu Energy Australia Pty Limited (BEN) a subsidiary company of Banpu Public Company Limited is collaborating with EnergyAustralia in the development of the Wooreen Energy Storage System (WESS) in the Latrobe Valley in Victoria. This renewable energy will provide 350 megawatts of power and 1400 megawatt-hours of capacity.

The venture is worth AUD 700 million; each partner will hold a 50 percent interest in the venture, with BEN bringing in AUD 110 million. When it comes online in late 2027, the battery plant will be able to supply up to 230,000 homes in the peak hours in four hours, thereby increasing grid reliability.

The WESS project supports the strategy of Banpu as a growth of the renewable energy investments and commitment in the market. Its CEO Sinon Vongkusolkit noted that battery energy storage systems play an important role in energy security and grid flexibility.

This system will be powered using AI software, which is highly efficient in storing energy and releasing it when needed, which is in high demand. It also enjoys the long-term offtake deal with EnergyAustralia that provides stable revenue.

In its Net Zero 2050 commitment and a 20 percent cut in emissions by 2030, Banpu considers battery storage as its focal point of renewable energy infrastructure. The company is still concentrating on its portfolio optimization and its strategic market positioning, such as in Australia in the clean energy markets.
