Smart Infrastructure for Rail Protection Breaks Ground in New Jersey

Delco Lead, County Yard, Smart Infrastructure, Extreme Weather

Delco Lead in New Jersey is a smart infrastructure project to protect rail cars from flooding and rapidly restore service after extreme weather events, such as hurricanes.

The County Yard and Delco Lead Storage and Inspection Facility, broke ground on December 12. This smart infrastructure project will protect NJ Transit’s rail cars and locomotives from flooding caused by extreme weather events, like hurricanes.

The Delco Lead is stationed along the Northeast Corridor in New Brunswick and will store secure trains in storm areas to prevent damage and save lives. It will also build a new service and inspection facility to quickly place equipment back in service after a weather event.

NJ Transit awarded the $498 million project to George Harms Construction Co. as part of its effort to mitigate extreme weather damage like that of Hurricane Sandy. Adding smart infrastructure makes the New Jersey rail network more resilient and efficient.
