Y Combinator Backs Epic Games in Apple Startup Dispute

Y Combinator is filing an amicus brief in support of Epic Games in its appeal to the US Court of Appeals over the App Store and the fees that are charged by Apple.

Y Combinator has also intervened in the current legal action between Epic Games and Apple, making a supporting amicus brief on the side of Epic. The powerful incubator startup stated that the 30 percent commission charged by Apple and its restriction of third-party payment systems are unfriendly for innovation and investment in the app-based startups.

Epic first filed a suit against Apple in 2020 on the basis that it was abusing its authority and blocking developers to allow them to offer customers alternative payment methods outside of the App Store. Although earlier a judge ordered Apple to permit links to outside payment, Epic asserts that the new policies are still in violation of this decision.

In April, the court held that Apple violated anti-steering. Apple has followed this up by appealing the decision, with Y Combinator insisting that the court reject the appeal and rule in its favor.

The accelerator made numerous points about how startups rely on the existence of fair digital marketplaces to be able to scale and thrive. Apple may kill entrepreneurship and restrict consumer choice by remaining quite controlling.

On October 21, the high-stakes startup and tech industry case will go to trial.
