Google’s Storage Boost for Android Phones

New 32GB minimum storage rule for Android 15 ensures devices handle apps and data with ease.

Google has raised the bar for Android smartphones, announcing a game-changing mandate that all devices running Android 15 must pack at least 32GB of storage to include Google Mobile Services (GMS), the essential suite powering apps like Gmail and Google Maps. This doubles the previous 16GB requirement, with 75% of the storage dedicated to the data partition—a critical space for system apps, user apps, and personal files. For users, this means phones can now handle more apps, photos, and updates without constant storage warnings, delivering a smoother, frustration-free experience.

The shift reflects Google’s commitment to keeping pace with modern demands. Phones with less than 32GB won’t upgrade to Android 15 if they launched on older versions, nudging manufacturers to prioritize robust storage. While 32GB is modest compared to today’s high-end devices, it’s a lifeline for budget phone users who’ve struggled with cramped storage. This mandate ensures even entry-level devices feel capable and responsive.

“Storage isn’t just space—it’s the foundation of a great user experience,” a Google spokesperson shared, emphasizing the human impact. “We want every Android user to enjoy their phone without limits.” By setting this new standard, Google is paving the way for devices that feel as dynamic as the people using them, blending performance with practicality.
