Korean Researchers Advance Super-Capacitor Storage Technology Breakthrough

South Korean scientists formulate a flexible and high-efficiency super-capacitor, a breakthrough in the science and technology of cost-effective and scalable next-generation storage technology solutions.

Korean researchers have made a discovery in storage technology: a high-performance super-capacitor that will change the energy storage system. Dr. Bon-Cheol Ku and Dr. Seo Gyun Kim, of KIST as well as Professor Yuanzhe Piao of Seoul National University, headed the group of researchers that developed a composite fiber based on single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and conductive polymer polyaniline (PANI).

The new carbon nanofiber complex helps move electrons and ions more effectively, solving the long-standing problem of super-capacitors having low energy density. Their solution is high power and high capacity, and that is a milestone in the history of storage technology. The super-capacitor does not decline in its performance during 100,000+ charging or discharging cycles even under high-voltage scenarios, thus being the most suitable technology for electric vehicles, drones, and wearable items.

This innovation of storage technology can charge quickly, have a long life span, and be flexible as compared to the traditional batteries. It is also noted that mass production feasibility was attained by cutting down the cost of CNT production and integrating PANI. The film-like structures have now been developed to scale the commercialization activities.

Not only does the technology contribute to an improved performance, but also it helps achieve carbon-neutral objectives. It can be used in a wide variety of industries, including EVs and   and next-gen electronics. With this breakthrough, South Korea will maintain its leadership in the future of storage technology.
