Nano technology enhances the use of green-friendly pest management and increases crop production in Egypt, which will provide an alternative to chemical nematicides in farming.
A recent article published in the Scientific Reports shows the role of nano technology in transforming pest management and crop yield in Egypt. Nano formulations against Meloidogyne incognita, a nematode that causes damage to eggplants, were combined with natural agents such as Bacillus cereus and garlic essential oil by the team of researchers.
The nano technology intervention employed biosynthesized silver nanoparticles and nanoemulsions of garlic oil that enhanced adsorption and performance relative to conventional therapies. These inventions provide a sustainable substitute for the chemical nematicides and have proved excellent nematicidal activities in the field trials.
The research was carried out in Giza and nano formulations were used during planting and before one month. Nanoemulsions of garlic were particularly effective and lowered the number of nematodes by significant levels and increased the weight of fruits by more than 86%. On the same note, the silver nanoparticles improved dispersion and performance in pest control in the soil.
In addition to the suppression of pests, the improvement of the general health of plants was observed; i.e., growth, flowering, and yield of the plants increased with the nano technology treatments. Scientists noted that these sustainable green practices can sustain agriculture in an environmentally hazard-free way.
The results qualify nano technology as an essential instrument in improving the agricultural resilience of Egypt, chemical intake, and upgrading crops.
