Hanwha Aerospace Partners with Romanian Institute for Missile R&D

Collaboration Aims to Boost Precision-Guided Missile Technology and Foster European Defense Cooperation

Hanwha Aerospace has entered into a significant research and development partnership with Romania's Elie Carafoli National Institute for Aerospace Research (INCAS) to advance precision-guided missile technology. The contract was signed on May 22, 2024, in Bucharest, during the first day of BSDA 2024, marking a new chapter in bilateral defense cooperation.

The agreement was formalized by Mr. Kim Dong-hyun, head of Hanwha Aerospace’s land systems business group, and Ms. Adriana Ștefan, director general of INCAS. This collaboration is expected to enhance Romania’s efforts to modernize its military inventory, transitioning from Soviet-era systems to more advanced technologies. The partnership with Hanwha Aerospace represents a strategic move to bring Korean defense manufacturing expertise to Europe, facilitating knowledge transfer and local production in Romania.

Joint research activities under this agreement will include wind tunnel tests for precision-guided missiles, reflecting a comprehensive approach to defense innovation. Additionally, the collaboration is anticipated to explore further opportunities in aerospace engineering, potentially benefiting multiple sectors beyond land systems.

Hanwha Aerospace has expressed a strong commitment to expanding its cooperation with Romania across various domains, including air, land, sea, and space, through future joint projects. This partnership echoes similar successful initiatives in Poland, where Korean companies have established significant industrial ties, creating a broader customer base in Europe.
