Russian Black Sea Fleet’s Aviation Division Carries Out Intense Combat Drills Over the Black Sea

Russian forces bolster air and sea defenses with nighttime drills involving advanced fighter jets

The aviation wing of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet has conducted a series of high-intensity drills, targeting unmanned aerial and sea-based threats in the Black Sea. These exercises, reported by Interfax, showcased the fleet’s efforts to strengthen its defensive and offensive capabilities as it continues to face pressures from the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Involving the navy’s assault aviation regiment and air defense units, the exercises featured the Sukhoi Su-30SM, a twin-engine, two-seat fighter jet renowned for its maneuverability. The drills, carried out at night and at varying altitudes, included missions that saw aircraft soar to the stratosphere, reaching heights of over 13,000 meters (8 miles), according to the Russian defense ministry.

The Su-30SM is designed to ensure air superiority and effectively neutralize threats on land, sea, and in the air—even under adverse weather conditions or in the dark. Its versatility makes it a critical asset in Russia’s military operations, which have been stretched across both land and sea since the start of the war in Ukraine.

Despite facing significant naval firepower disadvantages, Ukrainian forces have dealt damaging blows to Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, which operates from its key base in Sevastopol, Crimea. These recent drills reflect Russia’s ongoing efforts to maintain control and readiness in the region amid rising tensions.
