In February, the major manufacturing economies of Asia found it difficult to recover from a decline. Japan was especially hard hit, as demand fell more sharply than elsewhere in the region.
Meanwhile, signs of improvement elsewhere in the region were overshadowed by an uneven recovery in China.
Asia's economy has been performing patchily, according to a number of business surveys that were made public on Friday. Japan's manufacturing purchasing managers' index (PMI) showed a decline in factory activity that was the fastest in over three years.
China's official PMI indicates a continued decline in factory activity, while the private-sector Caixin PMI showed a slight improvement. These contradicting data created more confusing signals.
According to Usamah Bhatti of S&P Global Market Intelligence, the PMI data for February showed that the Japanese manufacturing sector's operating conditions continued to deteriorate. He continued by saying that the sector's performance was still being negatively impacted by weak demand in both domestic and foreign markets, as both production and new orders declined at the fastest rate in a year.
The Bank of Japan's task in trying to pull out of ultra-easy monetary policy has been made more difficult by worrying new data that indicates the weakness observed in Japan during the second half of last year has continued into the first quarter of 2024.
In the fourth quarter, Japan unexpectedly entered a recession and lost its ranking as the third-largest economy in the world to Germany due to a decline in business and consumer spending.
Its PMI was influenced by official Japanese data released this week, which indicated that a decline in manufacturing output was the main cause of the factory output's fastest rate of decline since May 2020.
Amid a deep slump caused by a property sector crisis, China's economy is showing tentative signs of recovery. This is reflected in its patchy performance.
